| Depending on latitude, sunlight during the winter may not provide enough ultraviolet light to promote adequate vitamin D production. At other times during the year, even 30 minutes of exposure per day will usually lead to large increases in the amount of vitamin D made. If it is difficult to get sunlight exposute, full-spectrum lighting can be used to stimulate vitamin D production. |

Miracle Skin ointment, of PAB A esters, absorbs energy from the ultraviolet light and shields the Skin DNA molecules, oral and topically, dissolves into the Skin oil and doesn't wash out easily swimming or with perspiration. Forexcessive amounts of sunlight, wear a hat to shade the nose and face, a shirt, and apply effective ultraviolet screening lotions of PABA in ethyl alcohol (every 2 hours).
Skin lotions may be devised which will amplify protective Enzymes and restrict harmful ones. |

Long-wave ultraviolet light has been effectively used to treat psoriasis, but it may increase the likelihood of skin cancer. Exposure to the sun for fifteen minutes to half an hour (not longer) may reduce the scaling and redness. A liquid drug called methoxsalen (Oxsoralen-Ultra) is also widely used.
Q The FDA has approved a biological therapy, alefacept (Amervive), for psoriasis. Because this is a drug that alters the immune system, its use should be approached with caution. |
| This therapy combines ultraviolet light with an oral drug and has proven to be effective, even for those with advanced symptoms. However, this treatment has many potential side effects for some individuals, including eye problems, liver damage, nausea, and skin blistering.
Q For mild forms of vitiligo, topical corticosteroids may be used to restore small patches of nonpigmented skin.
Q An article in Let's Live magazine reported on a new treatment in which healthy pigment cells were transplanted into the affected area. |

Ultraviolet light therapy. This probably explains why sunshine is beneficial. Exposure to ultraviolet A in the dermatologist's office can help alleviate eczema symptoms. Stubborn cases may improve with the addition of a psoralen gel or bath before the light exposure. This is similar to a standard treatment for psoriasis. The dermatologist will probably recommend it if she thinks it will be helpful. Although it is usually administered in the office or hospital, a portable unit used at home can be equally effective.301

Humankind evolved in equatorial Africa, where exposure to sun is unavoidable, but as we expanded toward the polar regions, we no longer were able to get the right amount of ultraviolet light in sunlight. Thus, the further populations live from the equator, the more apt are they to suffer massive vitamin D-3 deficiency. In Canada, for example, there is enough ultraviolet in no more than 4 months out of each year. The rest of the year the ultraviolet is stripped from the light in its passage through the atmosphere. |

In addition to an elimination diet, there are several other factors that can be helpful such as ultraviolet light therapy, vitamin C, vitamin B12, quercetin, and thyroid hormone. These factors are discussed following.
Ultraviolet Light Therapy
Ultraviolet light (e.g., sunlight or tanning beds) has been shown to be of some benefit to patients with chronic hives.78,79 Both ultraviolet A (UVA), the nonburning type of sunlight, and ultraviolet B (UVB), the one that causes a sunburn, have been used. Patients with cold, cholinergic, and dermographic hives display the greatest therapeutic response. |

Apparently, the ultraviolet light, after penetrating the skin, increases the formation of free radicals. It makes sense to increase the protection against free radicals by using nature's antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and selenium. The frequent, recurring reports in the media about the dangers inherent in excessive exposure to sunlight continually frighten some people about the possibility of getting skin cancer. However, these reports do not discuss the connection between the nutritional health of the population and their susceptibility to cancer of the skin. |
| There is a clear but inverse relationship between the prevalence of MS and exposure to ultraviolet light. In 1952, we were asked to do a survey of MS in Saskatchewan. It was then known that the prevalence of
MS in Saskatchewan was four times as high as it was in New Orleans. The prevalence below Latitude 40 was much greater. This suggests that MS patients will do better if they move to sunnier climates. It is, of course, much easier to take supplements. |

Hemoirradiation therapy involves removing an amount of blood (up to a pint) from the body, irradiating it with ultraviolet light, then reinjecting it. This therapy has been used successfully in treating asthma, blood poisoning, cancer, infections, rheumatoid arthritis, and symptoms stemming from AIDS. Patients with vitiligo and psoriasis can benefit from the treatment of PUVA light therapy (psoralen UV-A). First, patients are injected with psoralen, a light-sensitive drug; then they are exposed to UV light.

Dr John Murray, Professor of Dermatology at Duke University, found that vitamin C decreased the intensity of the reaction to ultraviolet light. Subjects were pre-treated with a vitamin C solution or with placebo. The protective effect was immediate. The vitamin C was not a sunscreen, but it decreased the effect of ultra violet light by its antioxidant properties - that is, it wiped out some of the free radicals that were formed.
The fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin E should also have protective properties. |

Other risk factors include irritants inside the mouth, such as a broken tooth or ill-fitting or broken dentures; excessive alcohol intake; chronic use of a mouthwash with high alcohol content; poor oral and dental hygiene; ultraviolet light exposure to the lips; vitamin deficiency; Plummer-Vinson syndrome; HPV; and immune system depression.

While reducing our exposure to ultraviolet light, we need to take more vitamin D-3 to replace what is not being supplied by the sun. During the past few years, the role of vitamin D-3 in many reactions in the body has been seriously examined, and it has been found to be a very useful and even a remarkable nutrient needed in much higher dosages for optimum health.

Tinted and low-emissivity glass block a wide range of that natural spectrum in the visible range, as well as in the infrared and ultraviolet light ranges. While ordinary window glass admits a fuller spectrum of visible light, it blocks as much as 95 percent of the ultraviolet range. We may be quite a few years from achieving the development of window glass that admits the full spectrum of the sun.
For now, the ideal situation is window glass that admits more ultraviolet light. At least one manufacturer is already marketing ultraviolet-transmitting (UVT) glass. |

| We therefore view ultraviolet light as being a potential carcinogenic agent. We recommend that sunbathing be limited and that when it is done, proper ultraviolet blocking agents be used to mask the ultraviolet portion of the light spectrum and prevent it from reaching the skin. Fortunately, today there are many good skin creams which contain these blocking agents and allow people to be exposed to sunlight without fear of excessive ultraviolet light exposure.
There is also another important role that light plays in the prevention of cancer. In a very interesting article, Drs. |

Even window glass screens out 95 percent of ultraviolet light rays.
Ultraviolet, a much maligned and widely misunderstood form of light, is essential for good health. The fact that in large doses it causes sunburn, skin cancer, and maybe cataracts leads some people to believe it has no beneficial effects. Fact is, ultraviolet light—the full spectrum in small doses—is vital for a healthy human body. But it must be used judiciously. Too much ultraviolet, such as you get while sunbathing, can be damaging to the skin and eyes. |

Dark skin is a gift, because it allows you to spend more time outside under the natural son, without any risk of being overexposed to ultraviolet light. White skin is difficult to deal with. It can burn more easily, and it is obviously an adaptation to people who lived in northern climates with relatively low sunlight. In fact, white skin is white precisely because it needs to allow more sunlight to enter the skin organ so that sufficient quantities of vitamin D can be generated. Technically speaking, white skin is the mutation here, because early humans all had darker skin. |
