| Taurine is believed to act as a "cellular buffer," protecting retinal cells from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light and toxic substances. When animals were fed a diet low in taurine, their retinal tissue degenerated and their visual acuity declined.
In the past, taurine has been considered a "nonessential" amino acid, because the human body is capable of synthesizing it from methionine (another amino acid). However, the capacity of humans to manufacture taurine is limited,5 and deficiencies of this amino acid are known to occur in certain circumstances. |

Recall that in order to visualize the spots in a TLC experiment, one often views the plate under ultraviolet light. This is actually a form of spectroscopy; UV light is a particular set of wavelengths, and the compounds are absorbing some of the light that hits them, giving rise to various colors.
In HPLC, UV spectroscopy is frequently used as a detection method, and the process can be set up to be very quantitative. As the mobile phase flows out of the column, it passes through a chamber through which UV light also passes. |

When skin is exposed to ultraviolet light, that light can harm skin cells and DNA. Compounds that prevent this damage are called antioxidants. Eating more antioxidant-rich foods raises the amount of wrinkle-resisting antioxidants in the skin. Fruits and vegetables are famous for their rich hoard of antioxidants, but even eggs and fish have some of their own.

REPPED: After years of denying the health benefits of sunlight, conventional researchers are finally starting to recognize the important role that ultraviolet light plays in human health. Getting sunlight on your skin, research now shows, is extremely important for preventing and even reversing chronic diseases. I'm talking about prostate cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, mental depression, osteoporosis and even, to some extent, type 2 diabetes. |

Mike: But, just to be clear, this device doesn't emit ultraviolet light, correct?
Pederson: Correct. It will not do anything in the generation of vitamin D -- the production of vitamin D. What it will do, though, is it will affect your serotonin level in your brain. Serotonin is the feel-good neurotransmitter in the brain that Prozac, and that whole class of antidepressants, is meant to elevate -- they're the SSRI drugs.
Mike: Right.
Pederson: Sunlight also elevates serotonin, right?
Mike: Yes. |

By simply exposing your skin to ultraviolet light, your body automatically produces this nutrient, and then gets it circulating throughout your body to prevent all these diseases and enhance the function of your body and mind. This is an astounding realization, and it just goes to show you the innate healing potential of the human body when it is able to work in conjunction with the natural environment.
It's also interesting to note that your body automatically produces just the right amount of vitamin D. If you get more sunlight than you need, you cannot overdose on vitamin D. |

In his book, he talks about how important it is to get some ultraviolet light if you want to be a healthy human being. I strongly recommend this book for those who really want to know how vitamin D works and what a fascinating journey it takes through your body. You’ll learn how it is transformed by one organ and stored by another, and how the kidney, the liver, and the skin are needed to create this crucial nutrient for human health.

| Thus, they did not need the ultraviolet protection of dark skin pigmentation; they needed lighter skin that lets in more ultraviolet light and enables them to produce more vitamin D.
The exception to this is people who lived in Alaska and other northern climates. Despite their location, they still had dark skin. Why? Because they got their vitamin D from their diet, which was rich in fish oil. Now, again, this is not rocket science, it doesn't take a genius to figure this out. |

The sun's ultraviolet light energy impacts the cuticle almost the same way as bleaching the hair. Repeated or prolonged sun exposure literally wears away the hair's cuticle (the outer protective layer) by breaking down its keratin protein composition. Depending on the amount of exposure and how damaged or naturally porous your hair is, you end up with weakened, dry, brittle, and degraded hair.
Aside from the sun damaging the hair's structure, it can also affect hair color. Color pigment in the hair is held in a group of molecules that are relatively fragile and unstable. |

However, I believe the primary cause is diet—with stress running a close second.
Diet and Aging: The Sugar Connection
Foods that we eat can be either proinflammatory (i.e., they provoke an inflammatory response) or anti-inflammatory (i.e., they suppress the inflammatory response). The chief culprits in the proinflammatory arena are sugar and foods that quickly convert to sugar in the body (also known as high-glycemic carbohydrates). These include cakes, cookies, desserts, potatoes, most packaged breakfast cereals, breads, pastries, baked goods, juice, soda, chips, and rice cakes. |

And the reason for chronic vitamin D deficiencies in the black population is simply that their skin pigmentation is blocking the absorption of healthy ultraviolet light that would produce vitamin D under normal circumstances. Remember: darker skin pigmentation evolved in human ancestors who lived closer to the equator, where the sun was rather harsh and darker skin pigmentation was needed in order to protect the body from DNA mutations caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light. |

When you take off your favorite gold jewelry, you discover that the skin beneath has turned black. Is it skin cancer?
If the jewelry fits close to your skin and keeps it covered, the problem might just be black dermographism. This harmless condition happens when some ingredient in your jewelry rubs off on your skin.
Some say the chemicals in cosmetics, skin lotions, or even powder bring this on. |
| Both free radicals and ultraviolet light from the sun can cause cell damage in your eyes. That can lead to eye disease and eyesight problems. Antioxidants are especially suited to fight cell damage and free radicals. Like your own personal SWAT team, they stand ready to defend your eyes. They may also help you avoid the conditions that lead to cataracts.
Selenium is just one of the antioxidants your eyes adore. It works closely with another antioxidant, glutathione. Both selenium and glutathione should normally be present in your eyes - right where they can best defend against cataracts. |
| Exposure to ultraviolet light can boost cataract risk. Smoking and diabetes raise the chances of some types of cataracts, too.
What are the symptoms?
• cloudy or blurred vision
• problems with a halo or haze around lights
• poor or distorted color perception
• greater sensitivity to light

Our bodies have the ability to make vitamin D when ultraviolet light strikes the skin and reacts with a substance called 7-dehydrocholesterol. But those who get litde vitamin D in their diets and are not exposed to much sunlight can develop a deficiency. In Boston, for example, between November and February there isn't usually enough sunlight to ensure that those who live there will manufacture enough vitamin D. Luckily, this is not usually a problem, because most milk is fortified with vitamin D. Fatty fish is another excellent source. |

Thirty-seven people with psoriasis about to undergo light therapy were randomly assigned to receive either topical ultraviolet light treatment alone or in combination with a mindfulness meditation-based stress reduction technique guided by audiotape. Those who received the stress-reduction intervention showed resolution of their psoriasis significantly faster than those who did not.
Hypnosis and suggestion have been shown in some cases to have a positive effect on psoriasis, further supporting the role of stress in the disorder. |

It is hard to say whether the snow and ice in the colder states would be more damaging than the extreme ultraviolet light and torrential rains of hot places such as Florida or Texas. We should probably conclude that the abandoned big-box structures will not last more than one generation under any circumstances. Pretty much the same thing can be said about malls, strip malls, and chain restaurant buildings. Eventually they will be the salvage yards and mines of the future.
Our communities therefore will have to reorganize physically as well as socially and economically. |

"Cholesterol [formed by the body, not foreign cholesterol] turns to vitamin D - a vitamin needed for proper bone formation - when Sunlight or ultraviolet light strikes the skin. Without this vitamin the bones do not become calcified and will bend easily. This condition is called rickets."
Dr. Kime describes that Sunlight builds the immune system and increases the oxygenation of the skin.

What's certain is that antioxidants cannot hold up under normal styling conditions of high heat and repetitive brushing, nor can they protect hair from ultraviolet light or preserve hair color.

Few hair-care lines have such an abundance of pomades, waxes, putties, and texturizers. The line has four subcategories and I describe their unique properties in the respective reviews below. |

Everything that I've mentioned here in terms of supporting the nervous system will also protect your eyes from macular degeneration or oxidative damage due to exposure to ultraviolet light. Conventional medicine says that UV light harms your eyes, but that's only true if you don't have good nutrition and you don't have protective antioxidants in your tissues.
If you do have good nutrition and plenty of vitamin C or zeaxanthins, then you are far better protected against nerve damage from excessive ultraviolet radiation. |

L-tyrosine is converted by skin cells into melanin, the dark pigment that protects against the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. Thyroid hormones, which have a role in almost every process in the body, also contain tyrosine as part of their structure.
People born with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (page 354) (PKU) are unable to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine (page 568). Mental retardation and other severe disabilities can result. While dietary phenylalanine restriction prevents these problems, it also leads to low tyrosine levels in many (but not all) people with PKU. |
